Blacktown South is celebrating 50 years of public education. The school opened on the 19th May 1959. Mr Doug Moore was appointed as the first Principal of the school and Block 1 was the only completed building at that time. The school grew quickly as the population in the Blacktown area increased.
Blacktown South celebrated its 50th Anniversary on Friday 15th May. We welcomed current parents and family friends, past parents, staff and life members of the P&C Association. Also able to join us on the day was Mr Paul Gibson MP for Blacktown and Mrs Price who represented her husband the Federal member for Chifley, Mr Roger Price.
The day's festivities began with open classrooms where students were able to demonstrate what school life is like for children at school in 2009. Parents were able to look at their children's work and participate in the learning process.
The day's festivities continued with a whole school assembly. Students from our Blacktown Festival Choir, Bollywood Hip-Hop group, Kinder Yellow and Burraay Miimi Choir performed. A past student, Nathan Fernandez performed two songs for us, which was a highlight of the program. Guest speakers, Mrs Laurie Boyd (previous DP), Mr Ted Powell (previous Principal), Howard Fan, Mrs Atfield Mrs Nash (past student) and Miss Busch(past student) talked about their experiences at Blacktown South. Mrs Rozanc (Zec) who wrote the school song joined Ms Rillera and Mrs Charlesworth to perform it on stage with the whole school joining in
Mr Scott dedicated the new garden paved area as the ‘Jan Devery Garden'. Mrs Jan Devery worked at Blacktown South PS from 1969 - 1996 in the administration office and completed her years here at Blacktown South as the School Administration Manager. The garden is a reminder of her hard work and dedication to the school. Keeley Devery her daughter spoke about her mother at the assembly and said that she would have loved the garden and she had been a passionate gardener all her life.
Mr Scott inducted past long-serving P&C office bearers with P&C life membership badges and thanked them for all their years of dedicated service to the school.
The first appointed teacher to Blacktown South Mrs Judy Stannard (Bromfield) cut the 50th anniversary cake with the school president, Katarina Trgovcevic. The assembly concluded with Lara Nakhle singing the National Anthem.
Special guests and visitors were able share their memories with colleagues and current staff other over a delicious morning tea and lunch.
On Saturday 16th May a dinner was held at Fox Hills Golf Club and this was attended by144 guests. The evening was a time to share and reminisce with friends. It was a very enjoyable time for all.
